Migrating to the cloud is a complex task, especially in today’s tumultuous climate of cyberattacks. When a federal client within the Department of Defense (DOD) needed to move classified workloads to the cloud, they chose NetApp and BlueAlly for the task.

The Challenge

The client was operating on a legacy system with disparate networks, each with its own hardware and backup systems.

These networks were nearing capacity, causing issues such as a lack of server room space, cooling, and power challenges. Additionally, the client had a significant volume of cold data—5-to-10-year-old operational data—that needed secure and accessible storage.

Our Approach

BlueAlly and NetApp’s approach focused on meeting the DOD’s stringent security requirements and providing a seamless migration experience. The solution involved:

  • NetApp Cloud Volumes ONTAP (CVO): Used to address capacity, data retrieval, power, cooling, and storage issues.
  • Storage Partitions: Allowed access for authorized users and networks, ensuring resource sharing and segregation.
  • Cold Data Management: CVO was deployed to move the client’s cold data workload to AWS or Azure, ensuring no disruption for local users.

Implementation Details

NetApp provided a multi-tenancy system that met the DOD’s security standards, including disaster recovery and continuous-operation capabilities. CVO enabled the following:
